Sliding Wardrobe Designs for Bedrooms: Sizes, Shutters and Costs for Bangalore Flats

Table of Contents

Quick answer

A sliding wardrobe design suits most Bangalore bedrooms where the gap between the bed and the wardrobe is under about 75 cm, because the shutters don’t need room to swing open. Plan about 60 to 65 cm of depth, shutters roughly 75 to 120 cm wide (so two for a 6 ft wall, three for 9 ft, four for 12 ft), soft-close tracks, and a loft above. A wardrobe in a Bangalore flat typically costs about ₹80,000 to ₹1.5 lakh in a 2BHK, and sliding hardware usually puts it towards the upper part of that range.

Sliding wardrobes look sleek in photos, but the real reason people choose them in Bangalore flats is space. In a bedroom where the bed sits a couple of feet from the wardrobe wall, hinged doors hit the bed, and every morning becomes a small shuffle.

This guide works from real room sizes: how many shutters your wall needs, how deep to build, how sliding compares with hinged doors, and how to plan the inside so drawers don’t clash with the shutters. For the rest of the room, see our bedroom interiors page.

Sliding or hinged? Start with the gap

Measure the clear space between where the bed will be and the wardrobe wall.

Clear gap in front of the wardrobe Better choice Why
Under about 60 cm Sliding Hinged doors won’t open fully without hitting the bed
About 60 to 75 cm Sliding, usually Hinged doors open, but you can’t stand in front of an open door comfortably
More than about 75 cm Either Choose on looks, budget and how you use the wardrobe
Sliding wardrobe Hinged wardrobe
Space in front None needed to open Needs roughly a shutter’s width to swing
Access Half to two-thirds open at a time Everything open at once
Depth About 60 to 65 cm (tracks take a few cm) About 55 to 60 cm
Look Large, clean panels, few joints More joints, more handle choice
Cost Usually higher, because of the track and roller hardware Usually lower
Upkeep Clean the track. Rollers may need adjusting over time Hinges may need adjusting over time

Worked examples from typical Bangalore bedrooms

A 10 x 10 ft second bedroom with a queen bed. A queen bed is about 5 ft wide. With a 2 ft deep wardrobe along one side wall, you’re left with roughly 3 ft to share across both sides of the bed. Push the bed towards the far wall and you might get 2.5 to 3 ft in front of the wardrobe. That’s tight for hinged doors. A 2 or 3 shutter sliding wardrobe on the 10 ft wall is the comfortable choice.

An 11 x 12 ft master bedroom with a king bed. A king bed is about 6 ft wide. Along the 11 ft side, after a 2 ft wardrobe and the bed, there’s about 3 ft left. Sliding still wins if you want a dressing space or bedside table on that side. On the 12 ft wall, a 4 shutter sliding wardrobe gives you a full wall of storage.

A 12 x 14 ft master bedroom. There’s usually enough room for either. Sliding is often chosen here for the look, or a walk-in corner if the layout allows.

If space is still tight after the wardrobe, a box bed with storage takes bedding and suitcases off the wardrobe’s hands.

How many shutters does your wall need?

Sliding shutters work best roughly 75 to 120 cm wide. Wider ones get heavy and can sag; narrower ones leave tiny openings.

Wardrobe width Shutters Approx shutter width
5 to 6 ft (150 to 180 cm) 2 75 to 90 cm
7 to 8 ft (210 to 240 cm) 2 or 3 75 to 120 cm
9 to 10 ft (270 to 300 cm) 3 90 to 100 cm
11 to 12 ft (330 to 360 cm) 4 85 to 90 cm

Shutters overlap by a few centimetres where they meet, so the usable opening is a little less than each shutter’s width.

Height: most sliding wardrobes run about 7 to 8 ft high, with a loft above to the ceiling. Use hinged or lift-up shutters on the loft. Sliding shutters up there are awkward to reach.

The inside: plan around the overlap

This is the detail most sliding wardrobe designs get wrong. When two shutters overlap, anything behind the overlap is hard to reach, and drawers placed there can hit the shutter.

  • Put drawers fully behind one shutter’s opening, not across the overlap.
  • Recess internal drawers a few centimetres behind the shutter line so they clear the inner shutter.
  • Long hanging (about 150 to 160 cm clear) for sarees, dresses and long kurtas.
  • Double hanging (two rails, about 90 to 100 cm each) for shirts and trousers. It nearly doubles hanging space.
  • Shelves about 30 to 35 cm apart for folded clothes. Closer spacing wastes less height.
  • Locker inside a drawer or behind a fixed panel, not behind a shutter that’s often left open.
  • Lights: a sensor LED strip at the top of each section switches on as the shutter slides open.

8 sliding wardrobe designs for bedrooms

1. Full-height plain laminate

Two or three tall laminate shutters in a matt or wood-grain finish. Clean, tough and the most affordable sliding look.

2. Mirror shutters

One or more full-length mirror panels. It doubles as a dressing mirror and makes a small room feel bigger. If you’d rather have a dressing table built in, see these wardrobe designs with a dressing unit.

3. Lacquered or frosted glass

Glass in an aluminium frame. Lacquered glass is glossy and easy to wipe. Frosted glass softens the look and hides what’s inside.

4. Two-tone shutters

A light main shutter with a darker or wood-grain panel, or a contrast strip. It breaks up a long wall of storage.

5. Fluted or textured panels

Fluted glass or textured laminate on one shutter adds interest without the shine of full glass.

6. Wall-to-wall sliding wardrobe

Wardrobe across the entire wall, ceiling to floor, with lofts. Shutter joints line up with the room’s window and door heights for a calm look.

7. Sliding wardrobe with a TV niche

In bedrooms with no other wall for the TV, one section of the wardrobe stays open as a TV niche. Plan the TV socket and wire conduit before the wardrobe goes in.

8. Kids’ room sliding wardrobe

Lower rails that can be raised later, washable laminate, and soft-close tracks so small fingers don’t get caught.

Board, frame and hardware

Part Good choice Why it matters
Carcass BWP plywood Holds screws well and handles monsoon humidity. It’s what we use for all our modular work
Board shutters BWP plywood with laminate or PU finish Tall shutters need a stable board so they don’t bow
Frame shutters Aluminium frame with glass, mirror or panel Lighter and stays straight in tall sizes
Track Soft-close, from a named hardware brand The track is what you feel every day. Ask for the brand and range in the quote
Bottom guide Low-profile and easy to clean Bangalore dust settles in floor tracks fast

Before installation: sliding wardrobes need a level floor and ceiling. Ask your designer to check both, especially in older flats.

What does a sliding wardrobe cost in Bangalore?

Wardrobes in Bangalore flats typically cost:

Home Approx cost
2BHK ₹80,000 to ₹1.5 lakh per wardrobe
3BHK ₹1 lakh to ₹1.8 lakh per room

A sliding wardrobe usually sits towards the upper part of these ranges, because the track, rollers and soft-close hardware cost more than hinges. Mirror and glass shutters cost more than laminate. Size, lofts, internal accessories and finish move the number the most.

FAQs

Which is better for a bedroom, a sliding or hinged wardrobe?

Sliding is better when the gap between the bed and the wardrobe is under about 75 cm, because the shutters don’t swing out. Hinged is better when you have space and want to open the whole wardrobe at once, usually at a lower cost.

What is the standard depth of a sliding wardrobe?

About 60 to 65 cm, which is slightly deeper than a hinged wardrobe because the tracks take a few centimetres in front of the carcass.

How many doors should a sliding wardrobe have?

It depends on the wall. Roughly two shutters for a 5 to 6 ft wardrobe, three for 9 to 10 ft and four for 11 to 12 ft, with each shutter about 75 to 120 cm wide.

How much does a sliding wardrobe cost in Bangalore?

Wardrobes in Bangalore flats typically cost about ₹80,000 to ₹1.5 lakh each in a 2BHK and ₹1 lakh to ₹1.8 lakh per room in a 3BHK. Sliding wardrobes usually sit towards the upper part of that range because of the track and roller hardware.

Are sliding wardrobes good for small bedrooms?

Yes. They need no space in front to open, so they suit small bedrooms where the bed sits close to the wardrobe. A mirror shutter also makes a small room feel larger.

Where should a wardrobe go in the bedroom as per Vastu?

Vastu commonly suggests the south-west or west wall for a wardrobe. If you follow it, tell your designer early, since it decides where the bed, wardrobe and door can go together.
